A moment of peace....

Hello ,

It's not every day you see someone doing something special. But I wanted to share with you today an incredible act of service from one of the people we serve.

Meet Gloria, whose grandfather had a hearing impairment and so Gloria took the time to learn sign language so she could speak with him.

She is now an experienced sign linguist and knows the power of not only helping serve her community with the skills she's developed, but also making sure that no-one is left behind as she uses her skills for good.

With the impact of climate change, farmers and marginalised people in Zimbabwe are having to move from their homes as they are struck by droughts, storms, floods, and other climate induced threats.

But Act for Peace's partner Christian Care is helping to enhance community adaptability and resilience to these threats posed by climate-driven displacement through their 'Building Sustainable Livelihoods and Climate Resilience to Mitigate Displacement in Zimbabwe' project.

And — through this project — Christian Care is working closely with the community to ensure fewer people are forced to flee their homes due to climate induced displacement.

Christian Care is training communities in innovative approaches to farming so that community members can adapt to changing weather patterns and ensure there are sustainable natural resources to last for generations to come.

Gloria goes on these trainings, using her sign language skills to translate so that everyone has equal access to the learnings.

According to Gloria “whenever there is training, there should be someone who knows sign language, so that others who know sign language can understand what is being said at that time, instead of hearing from others later.”

My colleague Tracey visited Zimbabwe in February and met with Gloria. Here's a short hello from them!

It's stories like Gloria's that remind us of the importance of not leaving anyone behind. Everyone deserves an education and the right to learn the skills that might help them face challenges in their future.

And, it's stories like this that give us hope for marginalised communities, including those affected by climate-induced displacement. I hope Gloria's story brings a smile to your face and reminds you of the incredible strength found in inclusivity and small acts of kindness.

Take care,
Alex
